The Wire, with its meandering storyline and complex subplots, couldn't compete. Despite The Wire's critical adulation and acclaim, the series escaped with few awards to its name and even less recognition for its production team and cast. It's fitting that season 3 of The Wire has a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, because it's honestly hard to fault. After a season spent licking their wounds, the Barksdale gang bounces back, getting the same sort of screen time they had in season 1.

I was born and raised in Baltimore. I was in middle school when “The Wire” was made — it filmed near McCulloh Homes and also sometimes near Harlem Park, where my school was located. Back then everybody thought, wow, this is Baltimore's moment. It was a very exciting experience for the city.

Why was Season 5 of The Wire so bad? ›

While the news plotline tied in thematically with the series and offered a truthful look at journalistic integrity, the characters didn't offer the same emotional connectivity as newcomers from previous seasons, and the storyline felt forced at times, with characters filling out simple archetypes in the setting.

While it's not available on services like Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime, the full show is available on HBO Now, HBO Max or DirecTV. Given that series was produced by HBO, it's little surprise to find it on their services.

This highly realistic and totally unvarnished drama series chronicles the vagaries of crime, law enforcement, politics, education and media in Baltimore as it follows a team of cops and the criminals they are after.

But “The Wire” did not receive the same ratings as broadcast or basic cable series for the simple reason that it did not air on a broadcast or basic cable network. It aired on HBO, a pay cable network, and at that time — before the advent of streaming — HBO didn't have the reach that it enjoys today.

5. Season 5. Widely-understood to be the show's worst season, there is still plenty in the fifth season of The Wire that's worth recommending. Season 5 adds journalism to the sprawling world of the show for the first time, and it's that journalism-centered plot line that ultimately falls a little bit flat.

There is one rule among Wire purists: never, ever skip an episode. I generally agree (and wouldn't even advise watching them out of order), but if forced, would come up with the following exceptions: Season 1: Episode 1, “The Target” Confession time.

The series concluded in 2008--but Sandtown-Winchester/Harlem Park is still a cauldron of poverty, crime, drugs and social pathology.

Simon based the character on Shorty Boyd, Donnie Andrews, Ferdinand Harvin, Billy Outlaw, and Anthony Hollie, a quartet of stick-up men who worked the Baltimore area between the 1980s and the early part of the 2000s.

In total, it adds up to two days and 12 hours of television. You should probably pace the binge to no more than two episodes a day, as drama like this can become punishing when watched back to back. But with dedication, the whole thing should take about two months. Where can you binge it?

McNulty is loosely based on Ed Burns, co-writer of the series.

He has stated on The Wire DVD that Barksdale is a composite of several Baltimore drug dealers. Avon Barksdale is likely based, to some extent, on Melvin Williams (who plays the character of The Deacon) and Nathan Barksdale.

When responding to a distress call, Prez fatally shoots a plain clothes officer, Derrick Waggoner, in a case of night-time mistaken identity. He is brought up on administrative charges and suspended because the officer was African American and the shooting was potentially racially motivated.

Most people know McNulty and Bunk as characters in David Simon's acclaimed HBO series—but they were actually players in a 19th-century book by H.B. Ogden.

In whole, the Sopranos has a higher re-watch value. The Wire does get preachy at times, but its also important to note that skipping scenes in the Wire is far easier to do than the Sopranos. The Wire's characters arc's are the best I ever seen At the end of the show, all characters come in full circle.

Duquan "Dukie" Weems is a fictional character on the HBO drama The Wire, played by Jermaine Crawford. Dukie is a student at Edward Tilghman Middle School. He has a difficult home life because the adults in his home are either alcoholics or drug addicts.

Two weeks after being admitted to the hospital, he recorded the song at the Record Plant Studios with his jaw still wired shut. Consequence recalls West started rapping the lyrics to the song three days after the crash. The song's title refers to the wires used to hold his broken jaw together.

Bodie first taunts Wallace, then hesitates, unable to bring himself to pull the trigger. Poot urges him on, and Bodie finally shoots Wallace, only to leave him wounded and dying. Poot takes the gun and finishes him off. D'Angelo is outraged when he learns of Wallace's death.

McNulty. Without a doubt, McNulty is one of the most talented detectives in Baltimore. He has a real talent for solving crimes and is very dedicated to his job.

At the scene of every action, Omar calls out loudly for Marlo to meet him on the streets. Kenard follows Omar into a Korean-owned convenience store. Omar, seeing the small boy, pays no attention to him. Kenard shoots Omar in the side of the head, killing him.

The Wire absolutely, without a doubt, lives up to all the hype and love it gets. The storytelling is so ridiculously good and that's because that this is one of the best written shows in television history. It's one of those rare shows where every season is just as good as the others.

The Wire was an indictment of a world in which, in Simon's words, “the rules and values of the free market… have been mistaken for a social framework” and in which “institutions are paramount and human beings matter less”.

While The Wire is a more realistic show, The Sopranos is better at drama. It is defined by earth-shattering story beats, whereas The Wire was defined by offering us a window into real life.
